The Metro Rio company that operates the underground system in the city of Rio de Janeiro asked us to conduct a series of projects aiming the improvement of the comfort and safety of their stations. We studied the safety of the platforms in situations of overcrowding due to incidents and determined criteria to implement screening walls. We applied the Nomad simulation model to determine the capacity in normal conditions of a station that is still being built. Furthermore, we performed an analysis of bottlenecks and overcrowding in the six most critical stations in the system. The studied considered the current situation and the operation after the increase of demand and supply due to the introduction of new trains in the lines.
