Mario Carlos Campanella has been working as a consultant in the field of pedestrian behaviours since 2006. With large experience in simulations of pedestrians flows, having developed, calibrated and validated his own simulation software. The Nomad model is a long term development that was initiated and supported by Prof. Serge Hoogendoorn from the Delft University of Technology.  The model was used to simulate several public spaces such as the Schiphol Airport (the main airport of the Netherands); train platforms in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Schiphol, the new subway station Jardim Oceânico in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the interior of trams in the city of Brussels in Belgium and the UVA University of Amsterdam campus and the ETH Science City University Campus in Zurich (Switzerland).

Short Biography:

Graduated in 1988 as Aeronautic Engineer at the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica in Brazil. In 1999 received his Masters Science in Computer Science specialization in Artificial Intelligence at the Instituto Militar de Engenharia in Brazil. Since 2002 he is involved as system modeller and developer in architecture and urban planning projects looking for ways to use distributed computational techniques to solve complex spatial problems. He developed systems for the architect Arnold Waltz in Stuttgart (Germany), Maxwan Architects and Planners and KCAP – Kees Cristiaanse and Partners in Rotterdam (Netherlands).

Between 2004 and 2006 he was partner with architects Ana Dzokic, Marc Neelen in Stealth.[u]ltd. Stealth is a multidisciplinary collaborative focusing on projects that take a wide view on urban society and its impact on space.

Since 2006 he is a researcher and PHD candidate at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in the Transportation Department at the Delft University of Technology. During his research at the Delft University of Technology, he participated in several applied works involving the assessment of pedestrian behaviours mostly using the Nomad simulation tool.

During 2011 worked affiliated with the Technical University of Denmark.

Since 2011 he is a independent consultant and has been working for the Metro Company of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In this work he is assessing the pedestrian flows in the stations, platforms and behaviours in the boarding and alighting processes. The aim is to diminish the present bottlenecks and prevent new ones after the increase of 40% more train offer.
